The first metal on the dial
Shen is a turning point. Wei and Kun before it are earth; Shen is metal, though it still sits inside the Kun group. Past 247.5 the dial moves into Geng and the Dui trigram. Shen is a border on one side, a change of element on the other.
In the three harmony frames Shen joins Zi and Chen as the water frame; the old books call it where water is born. So incoming water and water mouths are the questions asked most about Shen, more than peaks. Its images, monkey and early autumn, are quick and watchful.
Shen as water mouth, as incoming water, as sitting, and the gate that holds
The water mouth is the case Shen is known for. It is where the site's water leaves; it should be narrow, guarded on both sides, and turned so the water does not seem to rush. The star on Shen is Tianguan, Heaven's Gate, an ordinary star named for a pass, a checkpoint, where going in and out is controlled. For a tight Shen water mouth, ground and star name agree; Master Zhang treats that as a tidy confirmation, no more. A wide gap on 240 with water streaming out is no gate, whatever the star.
Water arriving from Shen should cross the front and turn. Sitting on Shen and facing Yin puts the back west-south-west and the door east-north-east.
What this means on the ground
Take the sitting as always: inside the door or behind the stone, three readings, middle value, no steel. For the water mouth, stand at the site, face where the water leaves, and read that bearing; between 232.5 and 247.5 the mouth is on Shen.
Inside the mountain, 232.5 to about 237 is close to Kun and still earthy; 243 to 247.5 is close to Geng and Dui; the middle is clean Shen. In 2027 the three sha fall in the west, on Shen, You and Xu, so work on the Shen side that year is a matter of date and order, not of giving up the side.
Common mistakes
The first is reading the water mouth from a map. On the ground the real outlet is often a gap seen only by walking the site's lower edge. The second is true north on the phone, which can shift Shen into Kun or Geng. The third is sitting a stone on 232.5 or 247.5, the latter also the line between Kun and Dui.
The fourth is reading Heaven's Gate as a verdict on the house rather than a confirmation of a tight water mouth. The fifth is treating the 2027 three sha as a ban on the whole west; it governs when and in what order you work.
