The stable sits beside the sovereign
Qian is the middle of the three Qian trigram mountains, Xu at 300 degrees on its left, Hai at 330 on its right. It is metal, and a grave that sits Qian faces Xun at 135 degrees. On the Tianxing ring Tianjiu covers the Qian band, with Tiankui before it and the noble Tianhuang right after.
That neighbour matters. Hai carries one of the four noble stars and a three auspicious rank; Qian carries neither. A range entering at 321 degrees is on Qian under Tianjiu; one entering at 324 is on Hai under Tianhuang. Three degrees changes the name, so the border is read with care.
What the school does with Tianjiu
A range entering through Qian is walked first: rises, turns, branches, a pinch before the head. If it is alive, the school notes a Qian range confirmed by Tianjiu. If it is flat, the star adds nothing. A peak on Qian seen from the cave is read for shape. Full, rounded and settled, like a loaded store, it is a good sha with the star behind it. Thin, broken or leaning away, it is a poor sha with the same star behind it, which is no help at all.
Water from Qian is read on its bend and its exit. The Cui guan pian takes dragon, cave, sha and water a chapter at a time and answers each with the ring; Tianjiu plays its small part in all four, landform first, ring second.
What this means on the ground
At a grave, stand behind the stone and sight along its face. Level the luopan, turn the line to each peak in the north west and read the ring. Between 307.5 and 322.5 the peak is on Qian under Tianjiu. Take three readings, and if the needle sits past 321 take three more, because Hai is a step away. Keep the plate clear of iron.
At a house or shop, stand inside the front door, back to it. On the north west bearing, a solid building, a garage block or a low rounded hill is a settled sha. An empty lot, a cut bank or a road running straight at the door reads poorly, and Tianjiu does not change that.
Common mistakes
Reading Tianjiu with an app: an app finds the bearing, not the ring, and the pairing of star to mountain is this school's own. Hearing stores and horses in the name and treating them as a forecast: the school reads imagery, not events. Letting a noble neighbour spill over: a 319 degree peak is on Qian, not Hai, and does not borrow Tianhuang. Measuring from a map: a flat picture in true north puts a north west peak a mountain away from where the needle puts it.
Questions people ask
What is the Tianjiu star in feng shui?
The Tianxing star on the Qian mountain, 315 degrees north west. The name means the stable of the heavenly horses, with the imagery of carts, horses and stores. An ordinary star that confirms a good Qian range or peak.
Is north west a good direction for a house?
Sitting Qian and facing Xun, north west to south east, is a common pairing. Good or not is decided by what stands in front and behind: open ground and gathered water in front, a real back. The star on the sitting bearing is read last.
How is Qian different from Hai on the luopan?
They are neighbours. Qian runs 307.5 to 322.5 degrees and carries Tianjiu, an ordinary star. Hai runs 322.5 to 337.5 and carries Tianhuang, a noble star on a three auspicious mountain. A bearing near 322.5 needs several readings before it is named.
If your plot sits on the north west, ask Master Zhang to read the Qian and Hai border on the ring, or come and learn the ring on the Ganzhou field course.
