Shaowei, the scholars' star on the You mountain

Shaowei is the star the Tianxing school sets over the You mountain, the 15 degrees centred on 270, due west. In the old star maps the four stars of Shaowei were the seats of the retired scholars, so the name carries study and a clean name. It is one of the four noble stars, and You is also one of the six elegant mountains. A range, peak or stream arriving on You carries the best of the sky, once the landform has passed.

Where Shaowei sits on the luopan

You is the middle mountain of the Dui trigram, Geng on its left at 255 degrees, Xin on its right at 285. Its band runs from 262.5 to 277.5 degrees, metal among the five phases, the rooster among the branches. The Tianxing ring of the school's luopan prints Shaowei over that band and nowhere else, so the star is found by bearing, not by looking up at night.

The school takes only the name from the asterism: scholars, a quiet reputation, learning. What stands on that place is decided outside, by hills and water.

How the school reads a noble star on You

The order never changes: dragon, sha, water, cave, facing, all on the landform first, and only then the luopan. If the incoming range enters through You with real rises and a tight neck before the head, the school says it arrives under Shaowei and carries the best of the sky. A tall, even peak on You, seen from the cave, is marked as the scholar's peak. Water crossing the You band is noted too.

The Cui guan pian answers dragon, cave, sha and water with the stars of the luopan, chapter by chapter. Shaowei is read in that spirit: a good thing confirmed, not a verdict handed down.

What this means on the ground

At a grave, stand behind the stone, face along it, level the luopan. Turn the sighting line to the highest peak in the west and read the ring. Between 262.5 and 277.5 the peak is on You, under Shaowei. Then the water mouth and the incoming range. Read each bearing three times, away from steel, railings and cars.

At a house or shop, stand just inside the front door, back to it, and look out. Note what stands due west: a hill, a tower, a roof line. A clean, settled shape on You reads well. A broken, sharp or leaning shape there is a poor sha, and the star does not mend it.

Common mistakes

Reading Shaowei with a phone or a hiking compass. They give the bearing, and the bearing gives You, but the star pairing lives on the Tianxing ring of this school's luopan.

Taking the name as a result. The scholars' star does not put a scholar in the family. It marks a bearing the school looks at closely once the landform is good.

Counting stars instead of walking: three peaks on noble bearings behind a flat, dead range is still a dead site. Measuring from a map or satellite picture: screens show true north, the needle reads magnetic north, and a few degrees pushes a peak into Xin or Geng.

Questions people ask

What is the Shaowei star in feng shui?

The Tianxing star on the You mountain, 270 degrees west, read on the Tianxing ring of the luopan. The name comes from the asterism of the retired scholars. It is one of the four noble stars.

Is a house facing west good feng shui?

The facing is set by the water and the ground in front, not by a star. Sitting You and facing Mao is a common pairing. What matters is whether the front opens, the water gathers and the support behind is real.

Is the west a bad direction in 2027?

In 2027 the three sha sit in the west, on Shen, You and Xu. That is an annual rule about when to break ground or set a stone on that side. It does not move Shaowei, which stays on You every year.
