An axe on a corner trigram
Kun runs from 217.5 to 232.5 degrees. It is a trigram mountain, element earth, and gives its name to the group Wei, Kun, Shen. On its left at 210 is Wei with Tianheng; on its right at 240 is Shen with Tianguan, the Gate. The pairing sit Kun face Gen is common; it puts Tianshi, the Heavenly Market, in front and Tianyue behind. The axe is a hard image: it cuts and it rules. A hill that answers to it is firm and square, flat topped or clean shouldered, standing behind the site like a magistrate's seat. A splintered hill, or one pointed at the hollow, is not an axe of office; it is a blade, and the trade reads it as a threat.
How this school reads it
Master Zhang teaches the star ring as the last check, never the first. Lai Buyi's Cui Guan Pian walks through dragon, hollow, sand and water and answers each with a star; that is the order we keep on a hillside. Tianyue is matched to whatever stands on Kun. A dragon that enters the head from the south west, a guarding hill on 225, water that arrives from that bearing: the star names it authority and judgement, meaning the form is strong and decisive. It cannot make a weak form strong. When the hill on Kun is low and scattered, or the water from Kun rushes past, Tianyue confirms the weakness and leaves it there.
What this means on the ground
Stand behind the headstone, sighting along its face, for a grave; inside the main door with your back to it for a house or shop. Level the plate, let the needle rest, read three times, and keep steel away. A bearing between 217.5 and 232.5 is Kun, and the star ring slot over it reads Tianyue. Then describe the object. A square, solid hill or a broad building with a flat roof line on this bearing is the kind of back the axe describes. A road junction, a flyover or a pylon at 225 is not; it is a cut, and the star only confirms it. For a sit Kun face Gen house, check the Gen side too: the facing carries the noble star, the sitting carries the axe.
Common mistakes
Treating the axe as a forecast of rank or command; it is the name's imagery, and no star on the ring predicts a career. Reading the star from a phone: there is no star ring in an app, and true north settings overseas can shift Kun readings into Wei or Shen. Counting the star before the hill has been looked at. Confusing the sitting with the facing, so that Tianshi gets written where Tianyue belongs. Measuring from a satellite picture where there is no stone to stand behind.
Questions people ask
What star is on Kun mountain?
Tianyue, Heaven's Axe, over 217.5 to 232.5 degrees, south west. An ordinary star with no rank, read as a check on the hill, road or water on that bearing.
Is Tianyue a noble star?
No. The four noble stars are Tianhuang on Hai, Tianshi on Gen, Taiyi on Xun and Shaowei on You. Tianyue sits opposite Tianshi and shares nothing of its rank.
What does Heaven's Axe mean for a house facing north east?
A house that sits Kun and faces Gen has Tianyue behind it and Tianshi in front. The back should be solid, square and quiet; then the axe image fits. If it is cut by a road or open to a drop, the star confirms a weak back.
