The Dipper's handle on Chen
Chen runs from 112.5 to 127.5 degrees, centred on 120. It is the branch of the dragon, the hour of seven to nine in the morning, an earth mountain between Yi and Xun. Its opposite is Xu, so sitting Chen faces Xu.
The Tianxing ring places Tiangang here. In the old sky maps the handle points out the seasons; it is the part that turns, firm and unbending. The imagery is power held hard and a rule kept strictly, and that is where the name stops. It does not say a site on Chen makes generals or judges, and it is not a warning either: a character, not a verdict.
Hard, strict, and still only a confirmation
An ordinary star confirms the landform and lifts nothing. With Tiangang the form it answers is firmness. A range entering from Chen in strong, well defined knots; a peak on Chen standing like a bar of rock, clean edged; water first seen on Chen holding its course: these have the hardness the name describes, and the star agrees.
Hardness has a bad side, read on the hill, not on the star. A rock face on Chen that is split, jagged, or thrusting a spur at the site is sha, a hostile form, and Tiangang does not make it kind. Heaven agrees with earth and does not argue with it: a strict name neither softens a strict hill nor rescues a weak one.
What this means on the ground
Locate Chen on the 24 mountain ring, then read the star ring in the same sector for Tiangang. At a grave, stand behind the stone along its face, level the plate, three readings. Sight each peak across the plate centre; one between 112.5 and 127.5 is a Chen peak, and now look at it as rock. Upright and whole is one thing, cracked and pointing is another.
At a house or shop, stand inside the door facing out. A tower, a pylon, a sharp roof edge or a cutting on 120 degrees is the Chen sand. The firmer and sharper it is, the more it matters that it is clean and not aimed at the door; the star is noted last.
Common mistakes
Reading hardness as luck. People hear authority and assume a grave on Chen produces officials; the school does not forecast careers from a name. Reading hardness as danger, the opposite error: a clean upright rock on Chen avoided because the name sounds severe. Judge the rock, not the word.
Taking the bearing from a phone held near a car, a fence or a gate; steel pulls the needle and a Chen peak slides into Yi or Xun. Measuring from a map or a satellite view, with no site to stand on and no peak to sight. Counting Tiangang as a mark on a site whose dragon has not been walked.
Questions people ask
What is the Tiangang star in feng shui?
Tiangang, Heaven's Bar, is the Tianxing star paired with Chen, the mountain at 120 degrees. Its name, the Dipper's handle, stands for authority, hardness and strictness; it is an ordinary star that confirms a firm, clean landform.
Is a rocky hill on Chen bad feng shui?
It depends on the rock. An upright, whole, clean edged outcrop on Chen is firm sand and reads well with Tiangang. A split, jagged face or a spur aimed at the site is hostile sha, and the star does not change that.
Which direction is Chen on the luopan?
Chen is the sector from 112.5 to 127.5 degrees, centred on 120, east south east, between Yi and Xun. Its opposite is Xu at 300 degrees. Read it with the compass on magnetic north.
