The office on Yi, 105 degrees
Yi runs from 97.5 to 112.5 degrees, with 105 at its centre. It is a heavenly stem, with no animal, hour or season of its own, the narrow sector between Mao and Chen. Its opposite is Xin, so sitting Yi faces Xin.
On the star ring the sector of Yi carries Tianguan. An office is where work is sorted, recorded and passed along: duties assigned, papers filed, people managed. The name describes order, not reward. It does not say anyone on this site becomes an official.
What an office star confirms
The school uses an ordinary star in one way only: to confirm a landform that has already passed. For Tianguan the form it answers is order. A range entering from Yi should come in with its joints in sequence and its last turn settling into the site. A peak on Yi should stand square and finished, like a desk, not a heap. Water first seen on Yi should arrive in a steady line rather than a straight rush.
When those forms are present, Tianguan agrees with them; a broken range entering from Yi stays broken, and the office does not tidy it. The Cui Guan Pian matches dragon, cave, sand and water to the stars in this same spirit: the star answers the form.
What this means on the ground
Find Yi on the 24 mountain ring, then read the star ring in the same sector for Tianguan. At a grave, stand behind the stone, plate level, needle settled, three readings. Sight the entering range, each major peak and the first sight of water across the plate centre, and note which fall between 97.5 and 112.5.
Yi is fifteen degrees wide between two branch mountains, so a reading near 98 or 112 is on the line. The school treats a line reading as unsettled and moves the sight a step to see which way it falls. At a house, stand inside the door facing out; a building or hill on 105 degrees is the Yi sand, judged for shape first.
Common mistakes
Mixing Tianguan with Tianguan. The two names sound the same in Pinyin but are different stars: Heaven's Office on Yi at 105 degrees, and Heaven's Gate on Shen at 240. Write the characters, not the sound. Reading the star off an app or a satellite map; the pairing exists only on the school's own ring, and a map gives no place to stand.
Taking the name as a career forecast. Office means order in the form, nothing more. Counting the star while skipping the hills, so a flat, scarred slope on Yi is written up as good because the ring says office. The form comes first, every time.
Questions people ask
What is the Tianguan star in feng shui?
Tianguan, Heaven's Office, is the Tianxing star paired with Yi, the mountain at 105 degrees. It is an ordinary star whose name stands for duties, documents and management. It confirms an orderly landform on that bearing and does nothing else.
Is Tianguan the same as Heaven's Gate?
No. Heaven's Gate, also Tianguan in Pinyin, is the star on Shen at 240 degrees. Heaven's Office is on Yi at 105 degrees. The characters differ, the mountains differ, and the imagery differs: a bureau against a checkpoint.
What direction is Yi on a feng shui compass?
Yi is the fifteen degree sector from 97.5 to 112.5, centred on 105 degrees, east by south east. It sits between Mao and Chen. Measure on magnetic north, since the luopan uses a magnetic needle.
If a range or a tall building sits on Yi outside your door, send the bearing and photos for a reading, or come and learn to sight it yourself on the Ganzhou field course.
