Tianming, Heaven's Mandate: the star on Mao

Tianming, Heaven's Mandate, is the star the Tianxing school places on Mao, the mountain at 90 degrees, due east. The name means the command of heaven: proper standing, legitimacy, a charge received. It is an ordinary star, not a noble one. Its mountain, Zhen or Mao, is one of the three auspicious mountains, so a range or peak on this bearing is worth a look for its landform grade. The star is then read to confirm it.

The star on Mao, due east

Mao is the mountain of due east, from 82.5 to 97.5 degrees with 90 at its centre. It is an earthly branch, the rabbit, the hour of five to seven in the morning, the spring equinox. It sits in the Zhen trigram between Jia and Yi, and its opposite is You.

On the Tianxing ring of the school's luopan the sector of Mao carries Tianming. Mandate means a name rightly held: a proper seat, a lineage in order, an office taken up because it was given. That is all the name says. It does not stand for rank, money or heirs.

An ordinary star on an auspicious mountain

Two gradings meet on this bearing. The star grade is the school's own: four noble stars, the rest ordinary, and Tianming is ordinary. The mountain grade is older and shared across schools: Hai, Zhen and Geng are the three auspicious, and Zhen is Mao. A range entering from due east is a Zhen dragon carrying an ordinary star.

The Tianxing rule is that the sky answers the ground, so the range is walked first: does it rise and fall, narrow at the neck, turn its head to the site. If the form passes, the luopan lands on Mao and Tianming confirms the standing its name describes; if the range is flat and broken, it confirms nothing. An ordinary star repeats what the hills say and never says more.

What this means on the ground

At a grave, stand behind the stone and look along its face. Level the luopan, settle the needle, take three readings. Sight the hill the range comes down from across the centre of the plate. If the line falls between 82.5 and 97.5 the range enters from Mao, and the star ring shows Tianming in the same sector. Peaks due east and water first seen there are sighted the same way.

At a house or a shop, stand inside the front door facing out. A hill, a tower or a ridge line on 90 degrees is the Mao sand. Judge it as a hill first: upright, whole, not leaning in. Keep keys, phones and steel away from the plate.

Common mistakes

Reading Tianming on a phone or a hiking compass. They give a bearing, but the star pairing lives on one ring of the school's luopan and nowhere else. Treating the name as a verdict: mandate sounds grand, so people assume a grave on Mao makes heirs. The name is imagery; the hills are the evidence.

Counting the auspicious mountain and the star as two good marks for one bearing. They are one observation graded twice. And setting the compass to true north instead of magnetic north. Overseas the difference can pass ten degrees, enough to push a reading from Mao into Jia or Yi and a different star.

Questions people ask

What is the Tianming star in feng shui?

Tianming, Heaven's Mandate, is the Tianxing star paired with Mao, the mountain at 90 degrees due east. It is an ordinary star, not a noble one, and its name stands for legitimacy and a charge received.

Is Mao a good direction for a grave?

Mao is one of the three auspicious mountains, which counts for a range entering from the east or a clean peak there. It says nothing by itself about a facing; that is set after dragon, hills and water.

Does the Tianming star mean my house is lucky?

No. A star on the ring confirms a landform that is already sound. If the hill due east of your door is clean and upright, Tianming agrees with it. If there is nothing there, or a broken slope, the star adds nothing.
